Frequently Asked Questions
  • How do you create the stained glass patterns?

Starting with a database of original period stained glass images, we have created a digital version of the designs so that they can easily be resized to suit any window sizes. We have also developed a method of incorporating high-resolution images of coloured glass, for a more realistic finish and added vibrancy.

  • How to apply stained glass window film?

Applying stained glass window film is simple. There are a few items you need:

    • A squeegee (we provide this when you make a purchase).
    • A mixture of warm, soapy water.
    • A spray trigger bottle.
    • Scissors.
    • A retractable knife.

    Method:

    • Prepare the glass - Before applying your window film, you will need to ensure that your window is clean and free from any dust and debris, as this can make it hard to apply and can cause bubbling in the window film.
    • Cut your film - If your window film wasn’t cut to size you will need to do so to ensure it fits your windows perfectly.
    • Apply your window film - You will first need to wet the glass with the soapy water solution. You’ll then need to expose the adhesive side of your window film and spray the adhesive side with the solution. Finally apply the window film from the top of the window down.
    • Utilise the squeegee technique - Wet the face of your window film to help as a lubricant for your squeegee. Use a firm and even pressure to fully apply the window film. Work your way from the top to the bottom.
    • Trim any excess film - You can use a credit card down the edge of the glass and use a retractable knife to trim any excess window film. Once trimming has been completed you should use the squeegee a final time to ensure they’re applied properly.

  • How to remove stained glass window film?

Window film is super easy to remove depending on how long you have left the film on the window. Some of the items you will need include:

    • A trigger bottle.
    • A retractable knife.
    • A glass scraper, with spare blades.
    • A soapy water solution.

    Method:

    1. Wet the surface of the window film with the soapy water solution to make it more manageable.
    2. Carefully score the window film into strips.
    3. Use the scraper to remove the strips and any glue residue.
  • Can stained glass film be resized to fit my windows?

At Purlfrost, we make sure all designs are resized to your specifications and the measurements you provided. However, if your windows are not of standard shape, arched or circular for example, the resizing process would be more time consuming and there would be an extra charge involved. Feel free to send us images of your windows as well as an indication of the design you require and we’ll get back to you with an indication of cost. Please get in touch via the contact form.

  • I am interested in reproducing a period design. Can you help?

Yes, we can! Just send us a photograph of your existing glass panel with the required sizes, and any relevant information, and we’ll get back to you with a quote. Please note that, though every attempt will be made to match the pattern of your existing glass design as best as possible, the finished product and the way the light interacts with it will be quite different to your existing glass. Contact us today for further information.
